Here at Bear Creek, we are very proud of our Ranch Horse breeding program. All are AQHA registered and come from outstanding proven bloodlines. With names like Poco Bueno, Doc Olena, King Fritz, American Dandy and Peppy San in your family tree, how can you go wrong.
We also search out only the best horses for our Trail Horse training program. Gentleness, versatility, good minds and sound conformations are the basic qualities we look for. Most of our Trail Horses are AQHA registered with outstanding pedigrees, but we don't discrimanate, if the horse meets all our requirements and possesses all the qualities of a great Trail Horse than they are also inducted into our program. There are so many great "grade" horses, who's papers have been lost for one reason or another or the owner just didn't take the time to register them. They are very intelligent and trainable horses who just need a chance, so many times these horses fall through the cracks and end up living in poor conditions or even worse, it is our goal to place these horses in good loving homes where they make wonderful trail partners and bring much joy to their new owners. Trail Horses that have gone through our program make trustworthy, dependable and enjoyable mounts in which you can feel comfortable and safe riding. He is not just your horse, he is your partner and an added member to the family.
Here at Bear creek we understand that each horse is an individual, having their own distinct personality and arriving here at different stages of training. With this in mind, each horse is carefully evaluated and a training program is put in place to address each individual horses specific needs. We are very meticulous in the training of our horses, training is done in a very calm, practical and relaxed manner. The most benificial aspect of our traning is that we progress through the levels slowly and methodically, sitting our horses up for success not failure, advancing to the next level only when they have mastered all the tasks that have been asked of them. Our goal to produce well trained happy atheletes who enjoy their job, after all a happy horse makes a happy horse owner.
The horse in training, starts out in the arena where he will learn to lead from the shoulder without being pushy and back up when you back without pressure, he will stand in crossties or stand tied with a single rope, he will bathe and clip with no fuss and stand for the Farrier and Veterinarian. He will stand to be saddled and lower his head to bridle, he will stand still for mounting and will not walk off untill cued. he knows lateral flexion and will walk, trot, canter and back up under saddle.
As he progresses through our training program, he will have been exposed to cattle and/or sheep and our obstacle course where he has been desensitized to a tarp, he has gone over the wooden bridge, thru the cowboy tarp and more. By this stage he has become easy to cue and responsive to your aids.
He is ready to hit the trails, where all that he has learned in the arena on the obstacle course will be utilized. He will be trained on some tough trails, no hot house flowers here. He will learn to climb steep and rugged hills where there is loose rock and slick footing. He will learn to decend slick banks safley, go thru creeks and cross fallen timber. He will not look for boogers, he will guide with a touch of your rein and avoid trees with a squeeze of your leg. He must be social and get along with other horses. A trail ride is no place for a horse that kicks, bites or generally dislikes other horses.
By this stage, he has logged many miles on the trail and has been taken to multipule organized rides where he has been riden for several hours at a time. He has become confident and sure footed and has learned to navigate rough tarrain taking care of himself and you on the trail. He will go alone or with a group, he will lead the group, he will follow behind or he will gladly hang content some where in the middle. He will rate himself at a comfortable, enjoyable pace keeping up with all the groups starts and stops, no poking along and playing catch up and he has stood tied to the picket line calmly overnight with other horses. Now we have a Bear Creek trained Trail Horse,
From here, he will be fine tuned and polished and will have some nice fun buttons added. He will be soft in the mouth and will react to a light neck rein and will manuver with minimal leg pressure and he will rate himself nicely and ride in all gaits on the correct lead with a loose rein, he will stop with just your seat, he will sidepass, do a nice spin and rollback. He will open and close the gait, he will jump obstacles, if desired. He will pull logs and has worked livestock, this is the Bear Creek Trail Horse "DELUXE".
